The Basílica de la Sagrada Família (Basilica of the Holly Family), designed by the Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí, is the symbol of the city of Barcelona and a major tourist attraction. Gaudí devoted 43 years of his life to the realization of this breathtaking temple. At the time of his sudden death only a quarter of the project was done. As of today the work remains unfinished and it relies on private donations. Guided tours are highly recommended for those who want to visit the temple unhurriedly. The park is named after the wealthy local entrepreneur Eusebi Güell, who entrusted the design of a luxurious residential complex to Antoni Gaudí. However, a few years later, in 1922 it opened as a public park and from then on has become one of the most visited places in the city. In 1984 UNESCO declared the park a World Heritage Site. The Park Güell is a huge garden composed of architectonic elements designed by Antoni Gaudí that combine nature and geometrical shapes and volumes. The majority of the elements surfaces are decorated with colored mosaics. A 110-meter bench in the shape of a snake lies right in the center of the park.

Barcelona has a very efficient public transport network for you to use. However, although it is a big city, most of its interesting areas are walkable. Pintxos are the Basque version of tapas, and “going out for pintxos” is also common in Barcelona. A great place to enjoy these snacks is Euskal Etxea, a well-known restaurant that offers a wide range of pintxos such as the chicken with tempura and saffron mayonnaise, the melted Provolone cheese with mango and Spanish ham or the mini pork brochette. At weekends the custom is to go to a few bars sampling tapas and homemade vermouth. Some of the most popular bars in the city are Calders, la Pepita and l’Electricitat.
